Ian Turner Music Tuition: Drums, Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards and Music Theory

Individual tuition and group lessons in home studio and schools

All ages, tuition for Rockschool grades and for fun

Based in Ely, Cambridgeshire

I teach drums, percussion, guitar, vocals and keyboards and music theory to clients of all ages (6 to 70 years) and abilities. I am an accredited Rockschool teacher (DipRSL level 4) and have over 30 years teaching and performing experience, so well placed to prepare clients for performances and playing in bands.

I use the Rockschool grading system which enables clients to obtain a Rockschool accredited exam certificate. Other clients play for fun, learn the songs that they love or create their own songs. Clients are able to record their exam pieces, favourite songs, own songs and even a whole album. I burn the songs onto CD or save them in mp3 format.

I offer clients an opportunity to try out a range of instruments so that they can choose the instrument(s) which they want to learn. I can tailor lessons to one or two instruments, and split a one-hour lesson, for example, into 30 minutes on guitar and 30 minutes on drums.

Individual and group tuition: I provide both individual tuition and group tuition for up to three clients in one session. This is ideal for children of similar age and abilities who want to learn the same instrument, or for families who like to make music together.

I have many years’ experience of working with children and adults who have special needs (e.g., autism, mental health and behavioural issues). Parents and carers are welcome to join in and help create a fun and rewarding session.

School tuition: I offer individual and group tuition. I create and lead Rockschool bands, either in school time or as an after school club, which are very popular. Students can either play their own instruments or rotate instruments so that they gain experience with a range of instruments before deciding which instrument to take up. I am also happy to provide individual tuition in schools.

Drums and Percussion

I teach the drums using the Rockschool grading system. This includes music theory, sight readings and improvisation. Other clients use the Rockschool materials but do not take exams. They focus on playing for fun whilst having a goal to aim for. I have a full Roland electronic drum kit and use a wide range of backing tracks. I also teach percussion instruments, e.g., cajón and hand drums.

Many clients like to play along to their favourite songs and I accompany them on guitar or keyboard. Others write their own drum and percussion rhythms. We can produce multi-layered tracks with a range of instruments, and record them on CD or save them as an mp3 file.

Electric and Acoustic Guitar

I teach electric and acoustic guitar using the Rockschool grading system. This includes music theory, sight readings and improvisation. Other clients use the Rockschool materials but do not take exams. They want to play for fun whilst having a goal to aim for.

Clients learn Rockschool performance pieces, or learn how to play and sing along to their favourite songs. I teach how to vocally harmonise and to compose their own songs. All songs can be recorded on CD or saved as an mp3 file.

Keyboards

Keyboards are a great instrument to learn practical and music theory, in particular for the younger learner. Some clients use the keyboard to create their own songs / play along to backing tracks or to just learn the songs they love.
